Aura Basics

You have felt an aura before, even if you have never seen one. The inexplicable warmth you feel in the presence of a loving person, the chill that runs through you when someone radiates negativity, the sense that a room is heavy with tension or light with joy — all of these are experiences of the aura, the luminous field of energy that extends outward from every living being. Your aura is as much a part of you as your skin, and it carries information about your physical health, emotional state, mental clarity, and spiritual evolution.

The aura is not separate from the chakra system — it is its outward expression. Each layer of the aura corresponds to one of the seven main chakras, creating a multi-layered field of energy that both reflects and shapes your inner experience. Learning to sense, understand, and care for your aura is one of the most practical and powerful skills you can develop on your spiritual path.

What Is an Aura?

An aura is the electromagnetic energy field that surrounds the physical body. Every living thing has one — humans, animals, plants, and even the earth itself. Clairvoyants and energy healers perceive the aura as layers of colored light that extend anywhere from a few inches to several feet from the body. While most people cannot see auras with their physical eyes, many can learn to sense them through feeling, and some can develop the ability to perceive them visually with practice. Scientific instruments such as Kirlian photography and bioelectrophotography have captured images that appear to correspond to what intuitives describe as the aura.

The Seven Aura Layers

Just as there are seven main chakras, there are seven recognized layers of the aura, each progressively more subtle and expansive. The Etheric Layer (closest to the body, connected to the root chakra) reflects your physical vitality and health. The Emotional Layer (sacral chakra) carries the energy of your feelings and emotional state. The Mental Layer (solar plexus chakra) reflects your thoughts, beliefs, and mental patterns. The Astral Layer (heart chakra) is the bridge between the lower and higher layers, carrying the energy of love and relationship.

The Etheric Template (throat chakra) holds the blueprint of your physical body and your creative expression. The Celestial Layer (third eye chakra) reflects your spiritual vision, intuition, and connection to the divine. The Ketheric Template (crown chakra) is the outermost layer, connecting you to universal consciousness and the infinite. Together, these layers form a complete energetic portrait of who you are at every level of your being.

Aura Colors and Their Meanings

Red in the aura indicates strong vitality, passion, and physical energy — or anger and frustration if it appears muddy or dark. Orange reflects creativity, enthusiasm, and social energy. Yellow indicates mental activity, optimism, and personal power. Green is the color of healing, growth, and compassion. Blue signifies calm communication, truth, and spiritual awareness. Indigo or purple indicates deep intuition, psychic ability, and spiritual depth. White or gold suggests high spiritual development and divine connection. Gray or black patches may indicate areas of energetic depletion, illness, or blocked energy that needs healing.

How to Sense Auras

You do not need to be psychic to sense auras — you simply need to pay attention. Begin by rubbing your hands together vigorously for thirty seconds, then slowly pull them apart. Notice the sensation between your palms — a warmth, a tingling, a subtle pressure. This is your own energy field. Practice this daily and gradually you will become more sensitive. To sense another person’s aura, bring your open palm slowly toward them (with permission) and notice when you begin to feel a change in temperature, pressure, or sensation. With practice, you may also begin to perceive colors — either with your physical eyes or your inner vision.

The Aura and Chakra Connection

Your aura is the external expression of your internal chakra system. When a chakra is balanced and healthy, the corresponding layer of the aura is bright, clear, and expansive. When a chakra is blocked, the associated aura layer may appear dim, congested, or contracted. This is why energy healers often work on both the chakras and the aura simultaneously — clearing the aura can help release blocked energy in the chakras, and balancing the chakras naturally brightens and strengthens the aura. They are two aspects of the same system, inseparable and interdependent.

Caring for your aura is as important as caring for your physical body. Regular energy cleansing — through smudging with sage, bathing in saltwater, spending time in nature, or practicing meditation — keeps your aura clear and your chakras flowing. When your aura is strong and bright, you feel protected, vibrant, and deeply connected to the energy of life itself.
